The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, or simply Hogwarts, is a boarding school for British sorcerers and witches aged eleven to seventeen. This is where the first six books in the Harry Potter series, by JK Rowling, take place, each book equivalent to an academic year. The climactic battle of the book and the series takes place at Hogwarts.

The Hogwarts School is housed by Hogwarts Castle, a large castle located in an unknown location in Scotland, near the wizarding village of Hogsmeade. The castle has extensive grounds with a lake, a dense forest, several greenhouses and a Quiditch stadium. The castle also has an owl, where all the owls of the school and students live. The three highest towers are the Astronomy Tower, the Griffindor Tower and the Ravenclaw Tower. There are 142 flights of stairs in the castle, which was built on huge rocks over the lake. The castle is known for the many changes it has undergone in its structure over the years, as well as rebuilding itself after the Battle of Hogwarts. The Hogwarts coat of arms shows the animal symbol of each house and its colors. They are, clockwise from the upper left: the lion of Grinffindor, the snake of Slitherin, the eagle of Ravenclaw and the weasel of Hufflepuff. Some rooms in the school tend to move, as do the steps of the Grand Staircase. Albus Dumbledore once stated that he did not know all the secrets of the castle, as the site has witnessed centuries of ancient magic. The school has a considerable amount of spells and enchantments around it so that it is not possible to be found by a Muggle. Certain people cannot see the school, they see only ruins and various warning signs and passage is prohibited. Electricity and electronic devices don't work at Hogwarts. Radios, however, are an exception. JK Rowling explains the fact by saying that the radios at Hogwarts are not powered by electricity, but by magic.

Hogwarts was founded around 993 AD by two sorcerers, Godrick Griffindor and Salazar Slitherin, and two witches, Helga Hufflepuff and Rowena Ravenclaw. Each of them had a personality that they wanted in the new students. However, shortly after the school was founded, Salazar argued with the other founders about blood purity. Salazar wanted to admit only pure-blooded students, while the other three founders disagreed. Salazar left the school shortly after secretly building the Chamber of Secrets. When his real heir, the Heir of Slitherin, returned to school, he or she would be able to open the Chamber and free the monster that was there in order to purify the school of all muggle pupils.
